How to remove or restore favorites list in Windows 7?

Saturday, August 8, 2009

There is a list of Favorites in Windows 7 so that you can easily access important items frequently. You can see this list in the Windows 7 Explorer. These favorites can be seen in the navigation pane on the left hand side. Windows 7 includes a list of items in Favorites that can be removed if you want. You can also add more folders in the Favorites list. In fact, it is very easy to manage folders in Favorites in Windows 7. You simply have to follow these procedures in order to manage folders in Favorites in Windows 7:
How to Remove Favorites:

Windows 7 Explorer includes a few locations in the Favorites list. You might not find them to be your favorite or use them frequently. So in this case, you can remove those locations from the Favorites list. By default, the favorite locations are Recent Places, Downloads and Desktop. This list may also include Recorded TV if you have set it up in the Media Centre. If you want to remove or delete the unwanted locations from Favorites, follow these steps:
Right-click on the unwanted location that you want to delete.
Choose and click on Remove from the resulting menu.
How to Add Favorites:
Another way to manage folders in Favorites in Windows 7 is to add your own folders to the Favorites list. The frequently visited location can be easily added to Favorites. Follow these easy steps:
Open the folder you would like to add to Favorites.
Right-click on Favorites in the navigation pane.
Click on “Add current location to Favorites” from the resulting menu.
OR
Click on the folder that you want to add to Favorites. Drag it over to the Favorites list. This will establish a link with Favorites.
Here we have deleted all the old locations from the navigation pane of Windows 7 Explorer and added four new locations to it:
How to Restore Favorites:
However, you can easily restore the Favorites list to its previous state.  Just follow these easy steps:
 Right-click on Favorites.
Click on “Restore favorite links” from the resulting menu.
This will not remove the locations that you added yourself. It will only bring back the original ones.
By following these procedures to manage folders in favorites in Windows 7, you can quickly navigate through your favorite locations.

Trick: Enable high-speed USB 2.0 support in your VM

If you have created your VM image using an earlier version of VMware Workstation or Server, you possibly see the following error messages or advice:

“"Please upgrade your virtual machine to enable high-speed USB 2.0 support for the device "Removable Disk". An attempt will be made to connect this device to the best available host controller. This may result in an undefined behavior for this device"

In this case open the VM and click "VM" on the menu bar and select "Upgrade or Change Version". Select Workstation 6.0 as the type of VM.  Remember, if this VM came from an older version, you might want to upgrade the VM Tools as well.

In some cases, you can’t upgrade your  VM  because the menu entry  "Upgrade or Change Version" is grey and not changeable.   In this case you have to open your vmx-file using your favorite editor and add the following line:

ehci.present = "true"

Save it and restart the VM. You are now able to use your USB 2.0 devices without problems.

Trick: ssh-xfer: Quickly grabbing files over an existing SSH connection

Monday, August 3, 2009

The Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure Copy (SCP) make remotely performing system administration and copying files across secure links a painless operation. SSH and SCP use the same SSH protocol to protect network communications, but they rely on users knowing if they want a shell or to copy a file beforehand. You cannot easily use an existing SSH shell connection to a remote machine and just grab one or two files; if you want the files, you'll have to make another SSH connection for the file copy using SCP -- unless you have ssh-xfer.

The ssh-xfer project uses the local SSH agent to allow you to easily grab files using an existing SSH shell connection. You do not have to modify either the SSH client or server programs to use ssh-xfer -- but you will need to patch your ssh-agent. Although having to patch the ssh-agent is not ideal, you do gain one major advantage by doing this: you can send a file through more than one SSH connection.
